SMART Educators Conference 2011

Marshall Cavendish is proud to be invited to the SMART Educators Conference at North Vista Primary School on November 17, 2011.

The conference, which highlights the findings on the use of ICT in classrooms was attended by more than 100 Singapore and regional educators. Marshall Cavendish Online was on site to showcase the LuV series, a collaboration with MediaCorp which uses videos in teaching and learning of language in classrooms.

Delegates from Philippines

Marshall Cavendish Online hosted more than 90 school leaders from Philippines on 4 and 8 of November 2011. The itinerary of these delegates included school visit and tour to Townsville Primary School and West View Primary School where educators from both countries share and exchange ideas. To date, we have more than 80 subscribing schools in Philippines.

Marshall Cavendish Online and MediaCorp LuV Chinese Product Launch

In conjunction with the launch of LuV Chinese digital courseware, Marshall Cavendish Online and MediaCorp is pleased to invite Dr. Tan Chee Lay to conduct a workshop on <为科技注入创意温度>.

Mathematical Olympiad Talent Quest 2011

Marshall Cavendish Online together with Clementi Town Secondary School collaborated for the second year running in organising the Mathematical Olympiad Talent Quest. Primary 5 and 6 students from all over Singapore gathered at this event on 20 May 2011 in a showcase of their mathematical capabilities and winners walked home with attractive prizes including an Apple iPad.







We also caught up with Mr. Choy Chan Hong, Head of Department for ICT at Clementi Town Secondary School on what he has to say about the Mathematical Olympiad collaboration with Marshall Cavendish Online.


1. This is the second year Clementi Town Secondary School and Marshall Cavendish Online (MC Online) collaborated in the Math Olympiad. What made the school decide to select Marshall Cavendish Online as the partner again this year?

Mr. Choy:  MC Online have a reliable and proven platform that's capable of mass participation for our Mathematical Olympiad. Their wide outreach to the Primary Schools also proved to be of great help in the success of this event. We had build a great relationship with MC Online and they understand our objectives and requirements. Their commitment in making this event stretched beyond just purely sponsorship of the prizes.

2. What key feature did Marshall Cavendish Online possess that made Clementi Town Secondary decide to partner with us for this year's Math Olympiad?

Mr. Choy: We understand the capabilities of MC Online's portal and trust the reliability for conducting of online quizzes. Prompt and accurate tabulation of results were also key factors we took into consideration.

3. Are you satisfied with the support level provided by MC Online?

Mr. Choy:  Definitely! I would say that the support rendered had even gone beyond those provided by commercially-paid vendors.

 
4. Relationships and mutual understanding of needs between Clementi Town Secondary School has matured over the years, how has this benefited the planning and execution of the Math Olympiad this year?

 Mr Choy: The planning processes are definitely smoother as both parties are already familiar with the desired outcomes and expectations. The long-term partnership has created the confidence for the organizer to explore new ideas in the execution of the Math Olympiad. The high professionalism of MC Online representative has also resulted in greater trust and collegiality in the working relationship between both sides.

Marshall Cavendish hosts 50 international delegates in 2nd Marshall Cavendish Singapore Mathematics Global Forum



Marshall Cavendish organised the 2nd Marshall Cavendish Singapore Mathematics Global Forum from 22 September to 24 September 2011 at the Grand Copthorne Hotel, Singapore. It was a great opportunity to showcase Math Buddies to educators from around the globe, an online digital curriculum designed to support learning Math using the Singapore Math Approach. It adopts the same pedagogical principles from our Singapore Math textbooks and combines multimedia technology with instructional strategies to offer an engaging teaching and learning experience.

 

The forum focused on building global competence in schools, particularly in the area of Mathematics. Mr Sam Tan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Mayor, Central Singapore District was the guest-of-honour at the global forum.



There were 150 attendees this year, with 50 foreign delegates, comprising of educational policymakers, curriculum specialists, teachers and education ministry representatives from countries such as the United States, Chile, Panama, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Brunei. Some key delegates include Dr. Alan Burke, Deputy Superintendent, Washington State Department of Education, Lucy Molinar, Minister of Education, Panama and Tim Gopeesingh, Minister of Education for Trinidad and Tobago.

Ms Lee Fei Chen, Head of Publishing, Marshall Cavendish Publishing Group, said “Marshall Cavendish first initiated the Singapore Global Maths Forum to provide a platform for dialogue on the strategies and best practices of the Singapore Maths pedagogy. As the leading publisher of all of Singapore’s mathematics textbooks, it is an honour for us to assist in building greater competence in Mathematics in schools globally through new insights and to develop educational solutions that meet the needs of teachers and learners in the 21st century.”



This year, the delegates will be taken on a tour of the National Institute of Education, Singapore as many are curious as to how our teachers are trained.. They will also visit Holy Innocents, Rivervale and Pioneer Primary Schools to witness first hand, theory and policy in action on how Singapore Maths is being taught.

The Ministry of Education, Singapore also conducted a sharing session about the Singapore Maths curriculum. They expound further on the Singapore Maths curriculum framework, and touch on the salient features and the processes involved in implementing it nation wide.
Professor S. Gopinathan, Professorial Fellow at the National Institute of Education shared with the audience on Singapore’s Educational Development, with special reference to Mathematics, Science and Technology Polices.





Dr. Richard Bisk, Chair and Professor of Mathematics from Worcester State University was on the topic, Improving Math Performance: Learning from Singapore. During the session, he shared how Singapore Maths curriculum is used in the United States to improve the mathematical content knowledge of students and teachers. He also expound further Singapore Maths curriculum’s influence on the new Common Core Curriculum for the United Sates.

Mrs Ariellah Rosenberg from South Africa touched on South Africa’s education system, and  how South Africa will incorporate the Singapore Maths curriculum into their educational curriculum.





The Singapore Maths curriculum was launched in 1982 and has undergone several revisions since. The latest revision in 2007 continues to emphasize on conceptual understanding with a focal point in problem-solving. The curriculum was created by the Ministry of Education in a bid to address the problems Singaporean students were having in understanding Maths concepts. The programme has since evolved into one of the best and most effective pedagogies in the world with Singapore consistently ranked among top nations in international comparative studies since 1995. Schools in over 35 countries around the world have adopted the Singapore Math textbooks, published by Marshall Cavendish, with several adaptations to local curriculum requirements and languages.

English Language Institute of Singapore Launch

Marshall Cavendish Online is proud to be a part of the launch and conference for the English Language Institute of Singapore on 6-7 September 2011 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

It was a great opportunity to showcase our latest product, LuV English, to all the English language teachers during the event. Secondary LuV English is a joint collaboration with MediaCorp where students learn using videos. Through LuV English, students watch videos from MediaCorp and engage in comprehension exercises, discussion, writing and speaking activities around exciting themes such as current affairs, medical science, and performing arts.

Marshall Cavendish Presents: 12th Budding Writers Project

Into it's 12th year, the Budding Writers Project aims to promote works by children, for children. The project was born out of a desire to encourage young children to develop their creative writing and artistic skills. Organised by Marshall Cavendish Education, this project also provides young aspiring writers with the opportunity to get their work published and sold in bookstores. 

Through this, Budding Writers Project helps to inculcate the love of the English language among the young and inspire other young writers and artists.

MCEnrich.com at Singapore Book Fair 2011

Marshall Cavendish Online unveiled its new initiative – MCEnrich.com during the Singapore Book Fair 2011 from 27 May to 5 June at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre.


MCEnrich.com is an online portal for digitised assessment books and is the first of its kind in Singapore. Currently available for Primary school children MCEnrich.com offers a huge question bank plus many more exciting features like customized quizzes, progress tracking and focused practices. This portal truly enables the child to focus on his/her weak areas as it intelligently identifies them and sets personalised practices for remedial purpose.



The 10 day book fair saw the influx of over 300,000 visitors including parents, children and other walk-ins. There was an enthusiastic response to MCEnrich.com with parents signing up for the FREE trial which is valid till 31st July. 

 

The Guest of honour, Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts came by the MC Online booth and was even treated to a live demonstration of MCEnrich.com
